Apigenin is a flavonoid, a plant pigment compound found in chamomile, parsley and celery. It is the constituent most often credited for chamomile's traditional use before bed. In lab studies it binds the benzodiazepine site on the GABA-A receptor with low affinity — the same receptor system that governs how easily the nervous system quiets down.
